FAQ – Folded sheet metal roofs

FAQs on installation on folded sheet metal roofs

11. Which screws are used for assembly?

M8 or M10 stainless steel screws are used, depending on the type of rail and clamp. These are included in the scope of delivery (for complete packages) or available individually in the shop.

12. What torque is recommended for the seam clamps?

Usually 14–16 Nm. Please follow the instructions in the assembly manual and tighten the screws with a torque wrench.

13. How are module rows planned and aligned?

The rails are laid perpendicular to the fold lines. Observe row spacing and thermal separations!

14. What should you do if the fold lines are not exactly parallel?

Slight deviations can be compensated for by the rail mount. It is important that the modules are perfectly vertical and that no tension is created.

15. How is earthing carried out for a folded roof installation?

About the connection between module frames, terminals and rails. Potential equalisation terminals establish the conductive connection. Observe VDE regulations! For further information on earthing, contact your electrician.

16. Can glass-glass modules also be installed on a folded roof?

Yes – with special clamps and EPDM inserts. It is important that the clamping range specified by the module manufacturer is adhered to.

17. What should be considered when using very thin folded sheet metal?

For aluminium folded roofs < 0.6 mm, we recommend a static test. The clamping must not exert too much pressure at any one point. If you are unsure, please consult us.

18. How are the modules attached to the rails?

With end and centre clamps that engage in the upper rail channel. These are available for all standard module heights.

19. Are there any special regulations for lightning protection or surge protection?

Yes. PV systems on metal standing seam roofs are considered external lightning conductors – integration into the lightning protection concept is required. Planning by a specialist is recommended.

20. Can modules also be mounted horizontally on pitched roofs?

Yes, provided there are enough folds and two rails run under each module.

21. What needs to be considered with series connectors or rail joints?

In general, rail joints should not lie directly on seam clamps. In practice, however, connectors are rarely used on seam metal roofs, as the module fields are usually very small.

22. Do the rails have to be electrically conductive?

It is advisable to earth the system. Please consult your electrician for further information. Profiness offers parts and components for establishing an equipotential bonding.

23. The clamp must fit snugly on the rebate; the screw must not be overtightened. It is best to tighten it slightly by hand and then tighten it to 15–17 Nm.
24. How can I align the position of the modules?

The module position can be adjusted before tightening the module clamps. A plumb line or spirit level helps with precise alignment.

25. Can the system be used in snowy or windy conditions?

Yes, provided that the static requirements are met. Depending on the load zone, additional clamps or shorter rail spacing may be necessary.

26. What happens if a module slips or comes loose?

This is impossible if the installation is carried out correctly. The clamps secure the module against slipping. Torque and clamp dimensions must be observed.

27. How long does it take to install a typical set on a pitched roof?

Depending on experience, 1–2 hours for a small PV system (e.g. 4–6 modules). All components are pre-assembled or easy to assemble.

28. Can optimisers or power devices also be mounted on the roof?

Yes, special brackets can be used to mount power optimisers on the rails, for example. We recommend mounting them in a protected area below the modules.

29. What should be considered during dismantling?

Loosen the screws on the clamps, but do not remove them completely. The clamp can then be removed from the side. In many cases, it can be reused.

30. Are there assembly instructions available as a PDF file?

Yes, on the PROFINESS website under the respective product or directly in the shop under Downloads. Alternatively, customer service can provide them.

31. Can I shorten the mounting rails?

Yes. Aluminium profiles can be cut using a chop saw or angle grinder with a suitable blade. The cut edges should be deburred.

32. Are there any special requirements regarding thermal expansion?

For folded roofs, rail lengths should generally not exceed 3 metres. Please contact Profiness customer service for detailed planning.

33. Can I attach cable ducts or module optimisers to the rails?

Yes. There are compatible mounts for accessories that can be attached to the groove of the rails – without additional penetrations.

34. What should you do if the roof has slopes or uneven areas?

The system adapts to a limited extent. Height-adjustable adapters or adjustment plates can be used for larger uneven areas.

35. Can I also use the clamps on copper roofs?

No. Aluminium clamps are not suitable for copper – there is a risk of corrosion due to electrochemical reactions. Please use suitable components.

36. How can I tell if my pitched roof is strong enough for installation?

A look at the structural analysis or consultation with the roof manufacturer will help. For older or thin sheet metal profiles, please consult us in advance of planning.

37. What happens if I accidentally overtighten a clamp?

The clamp may lose its clamping force or damage the seam. In this case, it should be replaced. Observe the torque!

38. Are there EPDM underlays or protective pads?

Yes. For sensitive surfaces or glass-glass modules, we recommend clamps with EPDM rubber inserts to protect against microcracks.

39. Can the mounting systems be combined with lightning protection?

Yes. The rails can be used as part of the lightning protection system if they are professionally integrated and earthed. A qualified electrician is required.

40. Are there coloured rails or black clamps?

We supply bare aluminium rails (silver) as standard. Black anodised clamps in various designs and black rails are also available on request.

41. Can the folding clamps be reused?

Yes, if dismantled correctly, the clamps can be reused several times. A visual inspection for damage is recommended.

42. Are spare parts available for damaged components?

Yes. All system components are available individually in the shop or can be obtained quickly on request – ideal for repairs or retrofitting.
