FAQ – Wall mounting

FAQs on installation on the façade

11. How is concrete drilled?

Use a drill bit suitable for the substrate. The depth depends on the type of screw. Blow out the drill hole and, if necessary, use injection mortar.

12. What are injection anchors or threaded rods with mortar?

These are mechanically set anchors in which a threaded rod is glued into a drill hole filled with injection mortar – ideal for heavy loads or soft masonry.

13. What screw length should I choose?

The screw length depends on the thickness of the insulation material, the wall structure and the position of the rails. Rule of thumb: at least 50–70 mm anchoring depth in the load-bearing substrate.

14. How many fixing points do I need per module?

At least two per module side (i.e. four per module). For larger systems and high wind loads, the number may increase – static planning recommended.

15. Can I also use hanger bolts in the wall?

Only if there is a load-bearing wooden structure behind the façade. For concrete or brick, other screw systems or threaded rods are required.

16. Are there special adapters for thermal separation?

Yes, so-called thermal break adapters made of plastic ensure thermally decoupled screw connections – important for insulated facades or passive house constructions.

17. What to do if the wall is uneven?

Height compensation is achieved by precisely adjusting the bottom rail. The top rails can then be aligned horizontally.

18. Are top rails available in different lengths?

Yes. PROFINESS offers short rails, medium standard profiles and continuous rails up to 6.60 m – ideal for different project sizes and requirements.

19. How is electrical grounding carried out for wall mounting?

As with roof systems: equipotential bonding terminals between the module frame and mounting rails enable a conductive connection.

20. What tools do I need for assembly?

Depending on the type of installation, you may need a hammer drill, open-end wrench, torque wrench, cordless screwdriver, spirit level, laser levelling device (if necessary) and injection mortar set.

21. How do I align several rows of modules so that they are visually straight?

Mark the module grid in advance using a laser or chalk line. Install the top rails precisely in alignment – ideally using a mounting gauge or alignment aid.

22. Can modules be mounted seamlessly next to each other?

Yes. A gap of 20 mm between each module is required due to the centre clamps, but this is barely noticeable visually.

23. How far can modules protrude from the façade?

The distance depends on the rail and fastening system – typically 60–100 mm between the wall and the module frame. Important for rear ventilation!

24. Is vertical series connection possible?

Yes, with vertical module mounting. However, the cable routing must be adjusted accordingly – if necessary, with intermediate connectors or DC cable extensions.

25. Does the wall need to be load-bearing or load-supporting?

Yes. The loads from the PV system must be securely transferred to the load-bearing wall. Cavities or insulation boards alone are unsuitable for direct mounting.

26. Can damage occur to the insulation?

No, provided that thermal adapters and correctly positioned fixing points are used. Do not insert screws directly into EPS/XPS!

27. How are the top rail and module frame electrically connected?

Via the terminals (e.g. Profiness centre or end terminals) with equipotential bonding terminals. These establish a conductive contact to the module frame.

28. What to do with irregular façade surfaces?

Adjust the rail height using laser measurement or a spirit level; if necessary, use different screw lengths or wall brackets.

29. Can I also install the system on wooden façades?

Yes – with suitable wood screws. Important: Pre-drill holes to prevent cracking. Observe the minimum screw-in depth (approx. 70 mm).

30. Are there any differences compared to roof mounting?

Yes. Wall mounting is more demanding in terms of statics due to higher slope drag forces and may require special approvals – only carry out installation using tested systems.

31. Are there accessories for cable routing on the wall?

Yes. There are UV-resistant cable clips and channels that can be attached directly to the rail or module frame – neatly and securely.

32. Do I need to observe any fire safety regulations?

Yes. In some federal states, special requirements apply to façade installations (e.g. distance from windows). Consultation with an architect or building authority is recommended.

33. Is it necessary to clean the modules on the wall?

Depending on the orientation (e.g. north wall), more dirt may accumulate. Occasional cleaning with a soft water jet is recommended.

34. Can I get coloured splints or covers?

Yes. PROFINESS offers black anodised rails and other mounting materials (including screw heads) entirely in black – for a harmonious façade design.

35. What needs to be considered when planning window areas?

Keep a sufficient distance from window openings (observe fall protection measures!)

36. How can I even out unevenness in the insulation?

With adjustable wall brackets or different screw lengths – adapter plates can also compensate for small differences and guarantee precise alignment.

37. Is there any indication of snow load on the wall?

Wall mountings are generally free of snow loads. Exception: modules above roof surfaces or in areas subject to strong wind drift – in this case, consult a structural engineer.

38. Does the PV wall surface need to be ventilated?

Yes – there should be a gap of at least 6–10 cm behind the modules. This promotes cooling of the modules and extends their service life.

39. Is installation also possible on curved or sloping façades?

Only to a limited extent. Shorter rails or individual brackets can be used for slightly curved surfaces. A customised solution is required for severely curved surfaces.
